It makes no sense, but this is what you get in the age of Trumpery.

Job-seeking immigrants describe cold reception from Maine employers

By J. Craig Anderson, Portland Press Herald - June 22, 2018

Angela Okafor studied law in Nigeria, and after emigrating to Maine she studied and passed the state’s bar exam on her first try.

But Okafor, who speaks perfect English, said she couldn’t get a single Maine law firm to hire her. She ended up getting a job washing dishes.

“I worked in a dish room, a licensed attorney,” she said.

Immigrant entrepreneurs in Maine who spoke on a panel Friday as part of the Startup Maine conference in Portland said that despite a severe shortage of knowledge workers in the state, anti-immigrant prejudice prevents many Maine companies from hiring skilled foreign nationals.

Even with a suspended law license, Republican Seth Carey still won a Maine DA primary

One surprise in Tuesday’s election that may have gone under the radar is the unofficial victory of Seth Carey in the Republican race for the district attorney nomination in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties. Carey’s apparent win is unusual for several reasons, including the fact that his law license is currently suspended.

Carey’s law license has been suspended because he allegedly sexually abused a woman in his home in Rumford. A former client who moved in with him, the woman was granted a protection from abuse order against Carey. He’s appealing both actions and says he will spend the next five months trying to clear his name. Maine law requires candidates for DA to be lawfully admitted to the bar.

Carey faced an uphill battle in the race not just because of his history of legal problems — he’s been suspended before. After the allegations against Carey were made public, the Republican party chair asked Carey to bow out because of what she called “actual, credible accusations.”

In all seriousness, I do believe Seth Carey has some mental health issues, and deserves our compassion, but not our vote.  It is fascinating how he sounds just like Trumpery.

DA candidate Seth Carey faces disbarment hearing
By Christopher Williams, Staff Writer - August 9, 2018

AUBURN — Seth Carey, the Republican nominee for district attorney in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, faces disbarment next week, stemming in part from allegations he sexually abused a woman and then proposed paying her to drop her complaint.

Next week’s hearing will focus on the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar’s amended 23-page complaint against Carey who, it says, should be suspended for two years or be disbarred.

“The events which occurred after (the woman’s) stay in Mr. Carey’s home constituted both criminal and serious professional misconduct by Mr. Carey,” and that they violated his oath of office, according to the board’s amended complaint.

The board said Carey proposed he would pay $1,000 to the woman who filed the protection order in exchange for her signing a non-disclosure agreement that says there was no abuse by Carey and that she moves to vacate the board’s actions against Carey.

Those efforts by Carey violate the bar’s professional conduct rules, according to the board.

The board included in its complaint against Carey that a client of his filed a grievance with the board about Carey’s failure to “properly communicate with him about various matters involving (federal) litigation.”

That client told the board that Carey had not informed him of his suspension from law practice, and that he had charged him fees related to his case during the time Carey’s law license was under suspension.

Even after Justice Warren put Carey on interim suspension, Carey continued to present himself as a lawyer.

Warren’s suspension was not Carey’s first, but, in fact, his third in a decade.

Carey had been on a two-year suspension (that was suspended) when he engaged, according to a Rumford District Court judge, in criminal conduct, such as “offensive physical contact and unlawful sexual contact.”

Carey also failed to comply with the conditions of his earlier suspension when he didn’t show up for two counseling session with his clinical psychologist.

The board said Carey signed as attorney on a civil lawsuit filed in Penobscot County Superior Court, and negotiated that case after his license had been suspended.

The board said, Carey violated more than a dozen Maine bar rules of professional conduct, including competence, communication, fees, confidentiality of information, duties to former clients, fairness to opposing party and counsel, communications concerning a lawyer’s services, judicial and legal officials and misconduct.

Carey filed a civil lawsuit in Androscoggin County Superior Court against the woman who claimed he sexually abused her.

Carey wrote in his complaint that the defendants “have all essentially conspired to ruin my career, all based on total lies of (the woman) and the dangerous and reckless carte blanche concurrence of her taxpayer-funded  finger wag legal aid services lawyers.”  (Sounds like a witch hunt to me!  party )

The woman, to whom he refers as a “fake victim,” was represented by Pine Tree Legal Services, which represents indigent clients.

BTW...the vast majority of Republicans in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties have no problem with Carey's behavior and record, and that's deplorable.
