Stephen King says LePage is wrong about Florida residence

AUGUSTA — Stephen King isn't pleased with Gov. Paul LeBuffoon's claim that the horror writer has moved out of Maine.

LeBuffoon said states without an income tax, like Florida, have lured away Maine residents, including former Gov. Ken Curtis, who first introduced the tax. LeBuffoon said that King has moved away as well.

King told WZON-AM in a statement that LeBuffoon is "full of the stuff that makes the grass grow green." King, who owns a home in Florida but is a Maine resident, said he and his wife "pay every cent" of their Maine income taxes and "are glad to do it."

A revised version of LePage's address released Thursday no longer mentions King.

King says Gov. Paul LeBuffoon should "Man up and apologize" after his inaccurate claim that the author has moved away and doesn't pay income taxes in Maine.

LeBuffoon used his radio address last week to make his case for eliminating the states' income tax. He said states without an income tax, such as Florida, have lured away Maine residents, including King.

King quickly called out LeBuffoon, saying he winters in Florida but his permanent residence is in Bangor, where he says he pays a boatload of taxes.

LeBuffoon has yet to yield to King's demands for an apology, and the author tweeted Sunday morning that

LeBuffoon responded to a question about the spat during a public discussion by saying he never stated King moved to Florida to dodge income taxes. Instead, he contends he said King is "not in Maine right now."


King, who lives in Bangor and pays Maine income taxes, demanded an apology. He said of LeBuffoon in an email Thursday: "I repeat: He's not man enough to admit he made a mistake."
