That thought had never even remotely occurred to us until we saw their recent article on Barack Obama, suggesting he is Muslim. This is a quote directly from their article:

"Potential presidential candidate Barack Obama's middle name actually is Hussein as in Saddam Hussein."

Even John McCain’s camp is condemning this type of smear campaign. MSNBC recently ran a story on this very issue. (Of course, TRR will probably attack MSNBC for being “biased”) We’ve included an excerpt from the story but you can read the whole thing here.

Obama braces for race-based ads

Racially charged criticism has already surfaced in several states
updated 12:05 p.m. ET, Mon., June. 23, 2008

WASHINGTON - A presidential candidate who's named Hussein and wears a turban? A building that's called the White House but run by a black guy?

Those political images and ideas already have found their way onto TV airwaves and campaign buttons, possible harbingers of racially tinged messages in a general election involving the first black candidate to head a major party's ticket.

The article goes on to say:

The Texas Republican Party recently cut ties with a vendor whose political buttons at a party convention included one saying: "If Obama is president ... will we still call it The White House?" Texas GOP spokesman Hans Klingler said, "we will neither tolerate nor profit from bigotry."

Terry Holt, a GOP strategist who worked on President Bush's 2004 re-election campaign, said Republicans know that McCain has no tolerance for such tactics.

The TRR article says that “there was a distinct similarity between this particular site (the website they visited to get information for their story) and the Rumford Reporter. The blog authors actually are approaching issues in the same way that we have.” We agree with TRR on this point. It’s about misrepresenting the truth for their own political gain. For TRR, it’s business as usual.

I posted this at The Rumford Free Press on June 21, 2008

HOLD THE PRESSES, BARACK OBAMA’S MIDDLE NAME IS HUSSEIN!!

Please….

From The Rumford Reporter: “We checked out the website [www.exposeobama.com] and the first thing we noticed is that there was a distinct similarity between this particular site and the Rumford Reporter. The blog authors actually are approaching issues in the same way that we have.”

This quote says it all: “The blog authors actually are approaching issues in the same way that we have.”

This is true. In today’s politics, it’s called “swift boating”. The Rumford Reporter staff must be proud. They’ve brought “swift boating” to the River Valley.

I have a question. In the interest of fair and balanced reporting, why didn’t The Rumford Reporter include this link [http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/fightthesmearshome/] along side the “swift boating” link [www.exposeobama.com]?

For the record, I am not an Obama supporter.

T,

I saw your email on RFP and wanted to respond but it was at a really busy time and it got lost. That's the only problem with the RFP site. Things tend to get lost in some of the posts. It's amazing how alike we are in our thinking. Thanks for your input on this and all the other great post you have put on here. You have a really straight forward, balanced way of looking at things.
