Gov. Paul LePage on Friday reiterated his call for the state to pay off the $186 million it owes hospitals for MaineCare services.

"At the end of the day, all we have is our character," LePage said. "And a good character is you live by what you say you are going to do and you pay your bills. And I sure believe the state of Maine should not have the reputation of not paying its bills."

Shouldn't that apply to MePERS members as well? Oh, they are public employees... layabouts, leaching off the tax payer.

Teachers (and other public employees) who retired before LePage became governor, played by the rules, entered into a contract with the State of Maine, became "vested" in the retirement system, then retired with the expectation they each would received a benefit including a COLA. Retirees assumed the state would display some character and do what it said it was going to do. And yet, the COLA was eliminated for at least three years.

Does changing the rules AFTER the game has been played demonstrate "good character"? Not by LePage's definition.

Governor, when is the state going to pay ALL of it bills, not just those you feel are worthy?

With regard to the "Voting Rights Act"...

Republicans: Times have changed so the law must change.  The conditions that existed in 1965 do not exist today.


Chief Justice Roberts: “Our country has changed, and while any racial discrimination in voting is too much, Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy that problem speaks to current conditions.”

So...

This should lead the way to new gun laws since "Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy that problem speaks to current conditions". Surely, times have changed so the law must change, or are conditions today the same as they were in 1791?
