Xerox is the vendor for The EBT system through which SNAP and WIC operate in many states, and a routine check on their protocols caused the whole thing to crash.

A power failure at XEROX, a facilitator of EBT card payments, caused purchases in 11 states, including Maine, to be denied Saturday afternoon.

Commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services Mary Mayhew thanked the Maine people. "We appreciate your patience while Xerox worked to resolve this issue, and we apologize for any inconvenience. We realize that access to these benefits is very important to Maine families, and we will follow Xerox's investigation into the cause of the failure so we can ensure a similar interruption does not happen again.
As of this morning, all systems are back and fully functional.
