Trumpery budget defunds agency that seeks to boost Maine's economy

A federal agency created to boost the fortunes of communities near the Canadian border with New York and New England faces extinction under President Donald Trumpery's proposed federal spending plan.

The agency, the Northern Border Regional Commission, was created in 2008 to promote jobs and opportunity for those living in the northern reaches of the region, including Androscoggin County.

Overall, the New Hampshire-based border agency encompasses 1,100 towns and small cities and 36 counties across the northern reaches of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. More than 2 million people live in the region.

Here are a few more ways Trumpery plans to screw his supporters with his proposed budget:

*The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, would be eliminated. It provided $34 million in aid to Maine households this year.

*End a federal-state commission established to aid struggling border communities. The relatively small Northern Border Regional Commission, which serves Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York, would be eliminated. Between 2010 and 2015, it put nearly $3.9 million into economic and infrastructure projects in Maine, unlocking $11 million in matching funds.

*Cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would hammer the University of Maine. It would kill the $73 million Sea Grant program, which funds a dozen researchers affiliated with UMaine.
