Lax tax liens discovered in Byron audit

BYRON — Initial findings of the first audit of town finances since 2013 revealed officials have not issued property tax liens since 2011, Selectperson Linda Joyal confirmed Thursday.
Joyal said she could not comment on the progress of the audit, but confirmed that liens on properties with unpaid taxes have not been processed for the past seven years.
Town officials in the past have not been getting voter approval for spending.
Chairwoman Anne Simmons-Edmunds has served since 2008.

Plenty of excuses by no taking responsibility. Anne Simmons is a disgrace to the Town of Byron and the uniform she wears. How can she enforce the laws in one town and clearly break them in her hometown. Maine State Statutes clearly say fines and penalties are the law do to neglect of duties. Anne Simmons neglected her duties and should be summoned and fined according to Maine Statutes. Hart Dailey was a police officer and a selectman. He had no problems doing his jobs correctly. The Town Clerk wrote and passed out payroll checks without authorized signatures. She should be terminated also. She wrote checks for herself, her daughter and her husband a former Selectman. The locks on the town office should be changed. Miss Freeman and Miss Simmons should be banned from ever stepping foot in the Town Office again. The free ride is over. They both should resign or be removed from office. They both should be charged with civil violations and fined according to Maine State Laws. Simmons should be banned from being a police officer. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. I am disgusted with the disregard and clear violations of Maine State Laws by Freeman and Simmons

"Shameful and disturbing" is when an elected official neglects their duties. Read the Statutes and, if you can interpret them, adhere to them or don't accept the position again. Resign.
