Re: Calling all Poets
Basking in the notion
of their glory and prestige
Emerge the unfamiliar
the so-called "chosen few"
born of a desire for prosperity anew
Triumphal over the tried but true
they heedlessly give their oath
without need for introspection
The people behind their victory
should have been their cue
for guidance and direction
for clarity of what was due
Swinging mighty axe and sword,
the trio does commence
to exercise authority with
contention and dissent
Cleaving symbols of our growth
shearing off each crown
with no remorse or regards
a favor to our town
the unveiling of
(more than a few)
facades

Re: Calling all Poets
I once sat under a tree
while reading poetry
I saw a bird in the sky
who swooped and pooped in my eye
Now I will never again see
either the bird nor the poerty
for the poop has left me blind, you see
'tis the perils of reading poetry

Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd
But you can be happy if you've a mind to
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
Ya can't take a shower in a parakeet cage
But you can be happy if you've a mind to
All ya gotta do is put your mind to it
Knuckle down, buckle down, do it, do it, do it
Well, ya can't go a-swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
Ya can't go swimmin' in a baseball pool
But you can be happy if you've a mind to
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
Ya can't change film with a kid on your back
But you can be happy if you've a mind to
Ya can't drive around with a tiger in your car

SPOKEN: "Ya can't roller skate in a buffalo herd"

Re: Calling all Poets
Nocturne
Last month all the metaphors were suspended.
They took a leave of absence. They went on a
Vacation. They left no forwarding address.
They hit the road. They were gone, mister,
gone, and for a long time nobody has been
a breath of fresh air or a long tall drink of water.
The stars have to settle for being just stars.
Nonetheless, the street outside is clogged
with taxis whose drivers started to take a shortcut
to the airport only to discover
that the entry ramp to the bridge
had moved somewhere two blocks uptown
and the pattern of one-way streets
had been changed. So there they are,
shivering like a congregation of yellowjackets
surprised by unseasonal snow, and
honking like a field of migrating geese.
And all the while I'm still sitting in this room
looking out the dark windows, ignoring
the whiskey on the table and the ivy on the wallpaper.
What's going through my mind? Not much.
I'm just wondering when the figures of speech
will be coming back to town. Will they still
recognize me? I'm still pretty much the same
as I was when they disappeared, only
a little different around the eyes.

Vigs,
If you're going to print someone else's work, please give that person due credit. I'm certain that Kevin Berland would appreciate his being cited on this forum.

Re: Calling all Poets
That's not the case at all. It's because some time back we were pointing out that the operator of another blog was posting literary works without giving due credit to the authors. At that time, everyone here agreed that we would cite the author for any copyrighted work. We certainly don't want to provide the other blogger with any reason to target us unfairly.

Re: Calling all Poets
Stretching the word poetry, I like the lyrics to this song by The Verve, it reminds me that our happiness is within our own control:
The Verve
Miscellaneous
Lucky Man
Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am
But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
Well, I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands
Happiness
Something in my own place
I'm standing naked
Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just who I am
But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
I hope you understand
I hope you understand
Gotta love that'll never die
Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Gotta love that'll never die
Gotta love that'll never die
No, no
I'm a lucky man
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
