New Page Announcement

I heard today that New Page made an announcement to their employees that they were shutting down ground wood and long log for an indefinite period of time. They are anticipating some long term lay offs. Last in, first out. I've not heard if they have given a number as to how many people will be laid off.

Please note that despite this economic downturn, the Rumford Board of Selectmen still haven't put the item on the agenda for discussion. Perhaps they will bring it up and discuss it illegally (in violation of the bylaw they chose not to recommend for repeal).

What I am posting here is only what management has relayed to it's employees. If you require "official notice" you will need to contact New Page management or wait until they release a formal statement to the press.

For an indeterminate amount of time. Until there is demand for the stock #9 produces it will stay shut down.

Yes, but is it part of the last-in, first-out process? if so, that means they don't have to recall anyone within 30 days. This would be a much more ominous announcement for our community. These last-in, first-out layoffs could easily be permanent. The economy is not going to magically turn around on January 20th. Any efforts will take months to impliment and the effects will be slow. This is why we need to know the details as you get them.

Yes, this is part of the LIFO process.
