We can only hope.

Mark Eves says Paul LePig blackmailed Good Will-Hinckley to fire him

“I just don’t think there is any question that Mark Eves is qualified to lead Good Will-Hinckley,” Katz - R, Augusta said. “This really goes beyond the political. This is personal and vindictive. I often disagree with Speaker Eves, but he’s a fine and honest man. More importantly, he’s a husband and a father of three beautiful kids who is trying to support his family. Political battles are one thing, but (LePig) trying to ruin someone economically is quite another.”

Gov. Paul LePig reversed a routine and state-approved payment to a Fairfield nonprofit that operates a charter school the day it was announced that Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves was named president of the organization, according to a source inside state government.

A confidential source in the state Department of Education said that, the day Eves’ appointment became public, a top official of the state DOE was called to the governor’s office “for an impromptu meeting.”

According to the source, who asked not to be identified for fear of being fired, the governor’s office told Suzan Beaudoin, director of school finance and operations, to stop a payment of about $100,000 to the school. That payment, due as soon as the state budget was passed, would have been the first quarterly payment of the $530,000 the school was expecting to get for another year, after three previous years of similar payments.

The source said Good Will-Hinckley’s paperwork for the payment was on time and complete, so there was no reason for the department not to authorize the payment except for the direction from the governor’s office.

Although previous news stories about the controversy had implied funding had been cut to the school in response to Eve’s appointment, the information from the DOE whistle-blower is the first claim that formal action has been taken by the governor against the school.

There are some Tea Party wackos out there who are saying the Democrats voted to give Good Will-Hinckley $500,000, and then Good Will-Hinckley returned the favor by hiring Speaker Eves. The wackos are saying Eves' hiring was nothing more than an illegal payoff, a bribe. The Tea Party wackos failed to remember that the "illegal payoffs" were approved by Democrats, Republicans, and LePig himself for three years prior to Eves' hiring.

Once again, Tea Party types are not interested in facts, and simply make things up.  Kinda like their fearless leader, LePig.

Below is the Good Will-Hinckley statement (6/26/2015) regarding Speaker Eves firing.  It is clear that GW-H wanted Eves to lead their organization, but due to LePig's fund-cutting retaliation, which will lead to millions of dollars of private funding cuts, GW-H had no choice but to fire Eves to save the organization.

And Tea Party types applaud LePig's actions.  dunno

If LePig's actions are allowed to stand, Tea Partiers better watch their backs, as this could happen to them too.
Thankfully, there are a significant number of level-headed Republicans around the state to put the Tea Partiers in their place.  applause

On behalf of the elected Board of Directors charged with running a respected, 125 year old, private Maine educational institution whose mission is to serve non-traditional and at risk students across Maine, I would like to share a few things about the Board and its work.

Good Will-Hinckley conducted a rigorous, professional and structured search for president led by long-time, respected Maine education professional and interim school president Rich Abramson. That search process considered 19 applicants from across Maine and the country.

While the Good Will-Hinckley Board of Directors is made up of people from both political parties, all of the Board's work has been apolitical and each of its two votes in this matter have been unanimous.*

Each Good Will-Hinckley Board member is a fiduciary with clear, paramount responsibility for acting in the school's best financial interest. Political biases had no impact on either vote.

As fiduciaries faced with the loss of state and significant private funding, the very real financial consequences for the school made the Board's decision last Friday black and white.

Republican and Senate President Michael Thibodeau released a statement saying he was "very saddened by this situation and shocked by what is being alleged."

"Nearly all legislators depend on a career outside of the State House to provide for their families," Thibodeau said. "For that reason, I am deeply concerned about what has happened to Mark Eves and his family."
