Rachel Maddow highlights religious extremists attending Gov. Rick Perry’s prayer summit

On her MSNBC show Tuesday night, Rachel Maddow showed a series of loony clips of Evangelical Christian preachers who are attending a national prayer event hosted by Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Perry has proclaimed August 6 as a “Day of Prayer and Fasting for our Nation to seek God’s guidance” and has invited governors from across the nation to join his Christian prayer summit at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

The prayer summit is co-hosted by the American Family Association, a conservative Christian group that advocates traditional family values and the reform of American culture “to reflect Biblical truth on which it was founded.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the organization as a “hate group” because of its harsh and outspoken views on homosexuality.

One preacher participating in the event said that the stock market in Japan fell because the emperor had sex with a “sun goddess” demon.

Maddow’s guest, Wayner Slater, said the prayer summit was an indication that Perry planned to run for president.
