Is Poor a Crime
Ok, i held off as long as i could, seeing as it was the holidays and all... but
"IS POOR A CRIME"
No, nor is " Being poor a crime"
However really bad writing in the guise of " poetry" should be.
I hate to be so picky, especially when it comes to someone else's creativity, but I really cannot help yelling about this total affront to literary art.
Is it just me that went MENTAL over this?

You were critiquing the writing, not attacking the person.

Re: Is Poor a Crime
I find it odd that she's a mix of Rosa Luxembourg, a relentless fighter for the oppressed, and Sarah Palin, relentless fighter for the oppressors. I wonder how that will pan out. She's definitely a Bolshevik/Republican. A new species! Maybe we should call the Museum of Natural History.

Re: Is Poor a Crime
My favorite poem (that I request be read at my passing):
Nothing Gold Can Stay by: Robert Frost |
Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. |

I have always liked that poem. It was also used in "The Outsiders". The part where, I think it was Ponyboy, was lying in a hospital after being badly burned. It has been a while since I read it.

Re: Is Poor a Crime
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. |
Robert Frost (1874–1963).

Re: Is Poor a Crime
So, is that an attempt to make fun of a person's injuries??
I know what you mean, but let's not forget that someone did suffer from the event to which you reference.

I meant no disrespect to the guy who was injured, kevin. You should know that! I think you know how it was intended.... at least I hope so.

It is a curse, I look at things from many angles. Unfortunately, I often make mistakes myself, but that is part of being human.

I also see things largely in shades of gray (or grey, depending on your spelling heritage). That's not always a bad thing!

Re: Is Poor a Crime
I'm annoyed JSN didn't bother to get the property owner side of the story. What would promote a business person, who runs a property mgmt. company to simply allow the town to take over a prime commercial location, losing any money invested for a mere thousand dollars in unpaid taxes? I'm guessing that was the only way to rid themselves having to pay to house these people. Which is sad for the owner who has invested money in what they thought was their future, only to lose it to people who think they deserve what they haven't even remotely earned. That is a crime.

Don't have to speculate: here are the facts. The property owner in question also let several other properties go back to the town at the same time, so her motivations probably didn't have to do with that one property alone, but general financial hardship. The property in question has had some severe deficits, too, so maintaining it further probably would have entailed a significant new investment for safety and habitability, which the owner apparently wouldn't have been able to afford. Two other properties taken from this property owner were the ones the town had to demolish because of their condition. The property owner still has a few buildings in town, so has not gone totally bust. Complex situation, not appropriate for moralistic declarations of who's right and who's wrong.
